We are Chocolates and Tomatoes Farm so people expect us to have tomatoes. But, we are a small, sustainable grower which means that we only have tomatoes when they are in season where we are located in Middletown, Maryland. Sometimes we can get our tomatoes out a little earlier than the home gardener through the use of one important tool we have at the farm, our High Tunnel. This year, we had to add a green mesh around the outside of the tunnel because the bunnies, squirrels, and groundhogs were eating up our tasty treats!
We specialize in heirloom and hybrid tomatoes.
Our favorite heirloom and the one many people ask us about is the Cherokee Purple tomato. Those are the ones we have the most of right now.
Brandywine is another heirloom many people grew up with that we've got coming out right now.
We also have a Cherokee Carbon that is a hybrid tomato peaking right now.
We also grow a tomato that looks more like what you might see in the grocery store that we call our "red slicer" tomato.
It is a Bella Rosa variety that is round, has alot of flavor, and goes great on a sandwich.
If you grew up eating tomato sandwiches in the summer with round red tomatoes, then this is the one that is one that will probably bring back your taste memory (but we encourage you to try out the Cherokee Purple to create a new taste memory that is a little bit different but to us just as tasty).
If you stopped eating red tomatoes because they upset your stomach, you might try a yellow or orange tomato -- they have less acid (still need to eat them in moderation).
We Grow the Tomato Rainbow
We like to call what we grow the Tomato Rainbow because the tomatoes we grow really are all colors of the rainbow.
With each different color they bring somewhat different flavors, textures, juiciness, and acid.
You can taste all types of tomatoes and learn about the differences, and how you might want to use each one in our Tomato Tasting classes.
In something like a salsa, salads, or sliced tomatoes with olive oil on a plate, you might really enjoy lots of different tomato flavors.
Order Online or Just Come Browse at the On-Farm Market
Yes, we have more than just tomatoes ready for field-fresh, grown at Chocolates and Tomatoes, purchases at the farm right now including: NEW THIS WEEK - Sugar Cube Cantaloupe, blackberries, red and yellow beets, carrots, celery, cabbage, cucumber, eggplant, garlic, green onions, kale, yellow candy onions, potatoes, radishes, salad mix, spinach, yellow squash, and zucchini. We also pick up from other local farms fresh items that we and our customers love such eggs, peaches, nectarines, plums, and mushrooms. And we have locally made honey products that draw partly from hives at Chocolates and Tomatoes Farm, house-made sourdough bread, house-made chocolates, and local baked goods.
You can pre-order for pick-up at the Saturday Market, Monday-Thursday night here
Pre-ordering helps you: get exactly what you wanted (in case we otherwise sell out), gives you more flexibility in your day (you know what you want is reserved so you can come to the market any time rather than first thing), and allows you to have a shorter trip.
You can always look around after you arrive to see if there is something else you want to add.
Pre-ordering helps us to: make sure we have what everyone wants down at the market. We have so much on the farm that we can't bring it all down to the market stand. But, if we know you want it, then we will harvest and bring it. Some items we only bring down to the market if they are pre-ordered.
You can browse and buy while at the Saturday On-Farm Market, 9am-1pm mid-May thru mid-September
Look for the red and white tents
Turn in at the lane near the tents, drive past the tents, and park on the other side
We accept cash and credit of all types
Either way, we look forward to seeing you, catching up on each other's news, sharing garden/farm stories, and enjoying each other's company.
