We are always learning new ways to be in partnership with nature. We are sharing something new we learned this week. Thanks, MD Raptors Program, for reaching out to help us enhance our partnership with the environment.
Farmland Raptors
Farmland raptors can help to bring balance to the insects and creatures that eat our crops.
So, what is a raptor anyway?
A raptor is a meat-eating bird (often called a bird of prey). They have three common characteristics: keen eyesight, sharp talons, and a hooked beak.
The Maryland Farmland Raptor program is trying to bring balance back to our farmlands so they are helping farms create bird houses for various kinds of raptors.
We Hope An American Kestrel Joins Us Soon
Earlier this week, someone from the Maryland Raptor program put up a bird house to encourage an American Kestrel to come live at Chocolates and Tomatoes Farm. They put a pole on one of our existing fence posts to get the house up just a little higher and put some shaved wood bedding in there.
